Where do I start..... 2013 has been a challenge, and has taught me allot about what I takes to be able to successfully balance a working career along with sport at an elite level. I really think I've grown allot as a person in the last 6 months and I’m beginning to realise what it takes in order to successfully balance a career as well as developing as an elite athlete. While it’s been tough, it has helped me to develop a routine which requires great discipline (it's not easy going out training before and after a day of teaching children).
After a great last season, my motivation has been higher than ever and I was lucky enough to get offered a sponsorship with Compressport Australia. I have worn their gear for several seasons, so this is really exciting for me!
Over the brutally cold Canberra winter my form had been looking good after some positive local results. I took out 1st in the ACT duathlon champs, was 5th in the Canberra half marathon, 1st in the Canberra MS 10km fun run and 2nd in the Canberra times 14km fun run, which have all been against top class distance runners.
After lots of talking and planning at the end of winter, Jess my partner and I decided to make the move up to the North coast in NSW, an area where we grew up, and have been dreaming to get back to. At first we were pretty nervous that we would be struggling to survive, with no definite jobs lined up....but so far we have been very lucky! Jess got snapped up straight away with full time work at Grafton public school, and I have been picking up about three days a week of casual work at the local primary schools.
My triathlon season officially kicked at the Yamba classic distance tri. Once again I was cursed with a flat tyre on the first lap of the bike. Despite that, I battled on, but was feeling very ordinary, to finish a disappointing 5th Overall. After that, I had Port Macquarie 70.3. After a few sluggish weeks of training, I didn’t feel very sharp nor confident going into this race. I wasn’t far off the pace, finishing a respectable 10th within a solid professional field, although I know there is a lot of work to be done if I want to be up in the mix of top contenders.
